- Who is Keung To, really ? Part I
Who is Keung To, really? Aug 07 2024 by Mori. If you want to truly understand Keung To's work, you first need to have a basic understanding of who he is as a person. And whether this is the real him or just a crafted persona is something that can only be glimpsed through careful observation. But what can reveal a person's true self more than how they act in both their moments of glory and their darkest times? Amid the turbulent times in Hong Kong, Keung To emerged as a standout figure in the long-dormant music scene. With no background or formal training, he relied solely on passion and determination to be a successful artist. As an amateur, he entered a televised singing competition, where most contestants were seasoned veterans (mostly dancers) within the industry. Against all odds, he captured the hearts of both the professional judging panel and the audience, winning the competition with the highest scores from both groups. From being seen as an underdog—enduring a childhood marked by obesity, loneliness, and bullying, without a university degree or any formal training in music or dance—Yet, many cannot deny the undeniable fact: the stage presence he exudes the moment he steps onto the stage. You either have it or you don’t. Still, this pressure of his newfound championship title weighed heavily on him. These pressures gradually became more apparent as his popularity soared later in his career. As the champion, Keung To did not receive any special treatment. Upon debuting, he joined the boy band Mirror, which consisted of 11 other contestants from the competition, becoming just one member of the group. His solo career didn’t truly take off until a year later. His first solo track, "No. 1 Seed," reflected his preference for R&B. However, as a newcomer, he had little say in the selection of his songs. It wasn't until his fourth solo single, "Say I Love You with mask on” that Keung To began to take creative control, marking the emergence of his signature style. This uplifting song captures the act of expressing love despite the physical barrier of a mask during the pandemic. A special tribute for the medical community, a message of hope for the audience, that dark days will pass. It was precisely this song that earned him the honors of "My Favorite Male Singer" and "My Favorite Song" at the 2021 Ultimate Song Chart Awards. At just 21 Keung To became the youngest artist in history to win both prestigious awards. He then won both awards the following year with the song "Dear my friend", and secured two more victories for "My Favorite Song," with "what the work says" and "waves" making it four consecutive wins. The Ultimate Song Chart Awards stirred the stagnant waters of the Cantonese music scene that night. "Who is Keung To?" became the burning question across major online forums, even drawing the attention of independent media outlets that typically focused on politics or economics, eager to join the discussion about the results. Love him or hate him, he became a true "traffic magnet” over the internet since that day with people watching his every move. In conclusion, Keung To’s journey shows that true artistry is shaped as much by character and perseverance as by talent. Rising from a challenging childhood and an underdog status, he relied on passion, determination, and authenticity to carve his place in the music scene. His evolution from a boy band member to a solo artist with creative control reflects not only his growth but also his ability to inspire and connect with audiences. Love him or criticize him, Keung To has proven that genuine presence, resilience, and dedication are what make an artist truly unforgettable. Mori
- A Student Keung Candy‘s Four-Year Journey with Keung To
Written by keung._.sweet - on Augustus 28, 2025. Greetings everyone. I am a 16-year-old student and devoted admirer of Keung To, having held this deep appreciation for over four years. I would like to commemorate this journey by sharing some cherished moments connected to him. My introduction to him began at the age of 13 and has continued into my 16th year. Initially, I was only faintly aware of his name. That changed when a close friend inquired if I had watched ”King Maker“, a talent show. When I replied that I had not, she enthusiastically introduced me to Keung To and urged me to search for him online. Driven by curiosity, I entered “Keung To” into Google and was met with an abundance of information. I then visited his Instagram profile and found myself utterly captivated—as if drawn into a charismatic universe. I knew, at that moment, that I had become a genuine supporter. This period coincided with the COVID-19 pandemic, a time when public gatherings were heavily restricted. Despite having to wear masks, we—his ardent followers—remained undeterred, showing our support by visiting dedicated spots in Tsim Sha Tsui and Causeway Bay. As a student, I found it challenging to keep up with his activities during weekdays, so I devoted my weekends to quietly following his endeavors. Every Saturday, many of us would gather at the footbridge of Langham Place in Mong Kok to distribute fan-made merchandise. Those Saturdays became the highlight of my week—not only because of the beautiful tokens I received, but also because they offered a meaningful respite from the pressures of academic life. Due to my studies, I had missed several opportunities to see him in person, including his concerts. In March 2023, upon learning that I would be pursuing my education abroad, I made a firm decision: I must see him before leaving Hong Kong. The opportunity arrived in mid-April, when I learned that fellow supporters were gathering at MOKO for his Coca-Cola promotional event. I rushed to the location immediately. Although I stood at a distance, I was thrilled to finally see him in person. Later, he announced a solo concert in August—just before my departure. I was determined to attend. However, as everyone knows, securing a concert ticket is no easy feat. With no prior experience in ticket purchasing, I was unsuccessful. Fortunately, a colleague of my mother, aware of my impending move, generously offered me a ticket. It became the most beautiful and unforgettable gift before my departure—allowing me to experience his moving vocals and the electric atmosphere of a live audience. 💙 On the day of the concert, filled with nervous excitement, I arrived at the venue five hours early. Seeing the meticulously arranged photo stations, I was deeply touched by the collective devotion of his fans. Many were handing out self-designed postcards and posters. Upon learning that it was my first concert, several seasoned supporters guided me around, offered practical and beautiful fan goods, and invited me to a group photo. Inside the venue, the anticipation intensified. When he finally appeared on stage, illuminated by a convergence of lights, and began performing ”Tao“, the entire audience sang along. Until then, I had only listened to his music on Spotify; now, I was immersed in the grandeur of a live performance. 🍬 On April 30, 2024—his birthday—he released ”you ‘re out of this world“, a song dedicated to us, his supporters. I was moved to tears😭. After years of supporting him, this heartfelt gesture felt like an immensely generous reciprocation. It was my first time experiencing an idol composing a song specifically for his fans. That day, I resolved to vote for the song at the Ultimate Song Chart Awards on January 1. However, the ticket price was substantially higher than that of a concert ticket. As a student, I found it financially challenging and did not want to burden my parents. So I conceived a solution: I began crafting and selling phone straps at £2.50 each. Within a month, combined with my saved allowance, I had enough to purchase the ticket. I am profoundly grateful to all who supported my small initiative. 🥹 On January 1, seeing the fulfillment of a goal set half a year prior, I felt a quiet sense of accomplishment. 🫣 I had succeeded! I cast my vote as soon as I entered the venue. The results were to be announced at the end of the ceremony. Before the “Favorite Song” category was presented, the “Favorite Male Artist” award was announced. I had fervently hoped he would win. When the host remarked, “has been waiting for two years,” I knew it was Keung To. We screamed with excitement, alongside fellow supporters seated nearby😂, barely remembering to record the moment. After the exhilaration subsided, it was time for “Favorite Song”. When he won by a landslide in every district, I knew ”you’re out of this world “ had triumphed. 😭 As the song played, I wept once more. A hope I had held for eight months had finally materialized. ✨ In June of this year, I co-founded the page @student_keungtong with several other student fans, aiming to unite all young supporters in promoting and cheering for Keung To. Everyone contributes with heartfelt passion and continues to support him with unwavering dedication. 💙 If you were to ask me, “Was it all worth it?” I would answer, with absolute certainty: “Every bit.” The light he radiates on stage not only illuminates us but also adds vibrant color to our life’s path. 🌟 A 16 year old Student Keung Candy🍬 keung._.sweet
- Only Keung To can outshine Keung To
Written by LiviaC - on Augustus 24, 2025 - translated by Mori. Keung To’s performance at TIMA 2025 left such a deep impression on me. It wasn’t just good — it was breathtaking beyond words. He poured every ounce of himself into it, holding nothing back — pure, beautiful madness unleashed on stage. And the fact that he chose to sing every single song in Cantonese made it feel even more powerful, like a love letter to our culture. There are four moments forever burned into my memory that I have to share: ~“Gingko” (my absolute favourite) He stormed onto the stage with, “I’m Keung To, Everybody has a Role, Everybody Good Show.” That single line — simple yet powerful — lit up the entire venue; a spark that set the whole night ablaze. ©Wevers live ~“Spiegel im Spiegel” Then came the spellbinding contemporary dance piece — Every movement, every gesture, was perfectly fused with the lyrics, as if his body itself had become the song. No one else could have done this. No one. I’ve said it since the day this song was born: Keung To walks miles ahead of others. His vision is far-reaching, fearless. And each time he performs it, he reinvents it — new arrangement, new life. This is Keung Style: singular, unrepeatable, untouchable. ©Wevers live ~“Hu-Du-Men, lit. Stage Door” The moment those three bold characters blazed across the screen, my tears broke free and refused to stop. Seven years of walking with him — I know the man behind the name. I know his mind, his heart, his unyielding fire. … when the rhythm struck, he never falter on stage, and roared with defiance: “I’m a mad dog!” In that instant, a storm of wild, furious flames leapt from him to me, searing straight into my soul. Tell me — who else on this earth could ignite me like that, if not Keung To? ©Wevers live ~“Lady Killa” And then — the promise fulfilled. Fatboy, your moment will come, but tonight was proof of something greater: a mentee who remembers every word he’s spoken. Keung once said he’d bring you onto the stage. He didn’t forget. He carried it in his heart. And when the time came — he delivered. That’s Keung To: a man who keeps his promises. ©Wevers live TIMA wasn’t just a music event — it was an “achievement unlocked” moment, a bold step onto the international stage. From the very first note to the final pose, everything — his song choices, the order, the pacing — felt intentional. It wasn’t only a performance; it was Keung sharing his journey, opening his heart, and letting us witness his growth. And through it all, one thing was clear: he wanted to bring the beauty of Cantonese music to the world. K-pop, Canto-pop — why pit them against each other? Both shine in their own right. Seven years ago, I said Keung To was like an uncut diamond — dazzling, yet waiting to be refined. Now, he has mastered the craft. He knows exactly how to channel that fire within him. He’s no longer just a star on the rise — he’s a force ready for the world’s biggest stages. And I believe with all my heart: even greater stages await him so that he can rise to the next level - cos the truth remains unchanged — the only one who can outshine Keung To… is Keung To himself. ~Afterthoughts Last night, after Keung’s performance, I tried to WhatsApp a fellow Candy 🍬 — but my hands were trembling so badly I couldn’t even type a single word. 😭 In the end, I sent a voice note… and it was nothing but sobs, wave after wave of tears I couldn’t control. Because on that stage, with every drop of sweat and every ounce of effort, he proved everything to us. At his core, he’s still the same Keung — genuine, unshaken, with a heart that never changes. And that’s why he deserves us — every bit of love and loyalty we can give. Keung, as I always say, I’ll walk beside you for as long as this journey goes. But you’re running so fast, soaring so far ahead — we’ll just have to push harder, chase harder, to keep up with you. I love you, Keung 🫶🏻 Livia
